The theory of culturally responsive assessment suggests that specific strategies and methods of assessment can be used to ensure that migrant students can participate in an equitable educational environment that ensures and respects equity and diversity of assessment. This has resulted in the increased use of culturally responsive methods such as peer and creativity assessment in jurisdictions such as the United States. However, in Europe, very few studies have examined assessment strategies that teachers use to integrate cultural responsiveness into their student assessments and to compare the relative merit of these strategies . As such, this paper provides an exploratory analysis of responses to a questionnaire administered to head teachers in four European countries (…) to ascertain the school policies and assessment strategies and methods used by teachers to assess culturally diverse students. Overall findings suggest that a variety of culturally responsive assessment methods are used in schools, albeit to varying degrees in each country. Responses also indicate that most teachers have not received adequate training or professional development to diagnose, support or integrate culturally responsive assessment techniques into assessment practices. Finally, and worryingly given the use of standardised tests in all participant countries, a significant majority of participants are of the view that high stakes tests that are used in their countries have not been designed to be inclusive of students from migrant backgrounds and have not been standardised on populations of students similar to participant schools.
