Ireland is known throughout the world as a source of great literature; Irish writers are celebrated at home and revered abroad. However, in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), our prowess is understated; there are few who are acknowledged as household names. Awareness of our mathematical heritage is improving; the names of Berkeley, Boole, Hamilton, Stokes and Schrödinger (mathematicians from Ireland or who worked here) are much better known than they were a decade or two ago. In this talk, I will consider the work of the National Committee for Commemorative Plaques in Science and Technology in promoting awareness of Irish mathematicians and of mathematicians working in Ireland.
