The National Committee for Commemorative Plaques in Science and Technology (NCCPST) was set up in 1996 “with the idea of erecting plaques to scientists, engineers, and others in order to promote a wider appreciation of the country’s scientific and technical achievements”. This remit of NCCPST is understood to include mathematicians, but is confined to the Republic. To date, the committee has considered 20 mathematicians ‘worthy’ of a National Plaque, however a list has already been compiled that may treble this number. This paper will outline the work of the NCCPST from a mathematical perspective, drawing attention to progress to date and to what is yet to be accomplished.
