The transition from primary to secondary education is one of the greatest challenges that young people experience during their school years. The transfer, which typically occurs between the ages of twelve and fourteen, has been found to be even more difficult for mathematics. This paper describes the results of a survey undertaken in the Republic of Ireland, in which the views of primary and secondary teachers were ascertained with regard to the transition process. Specifically, the authors sought to determine teachers’ perspectives on how the transition could be improved. A total of 296 primary and 171 secondary teachers completed a questionnaire. Results showed that teachers of both levels pinpointed many of the same areas for improvement. The most common suggestions were the need for more communication and for joint professional development opportunities for teachers.
