Climate change first emerged on the agenda of world politics in the late 1980s. Over the two and a half decades since, the governments of the world have attempted to forge a collective response to climate change. This chapter sets out this global picture of climate change politics. It identifies the key moments in the development of the international response to climate change, highlights some of the key fault lines that characterize global climate politics, and identifies key players and how their positions are evolving.
