Biography

Jonathan is a Postdoctoral Fellow in Philosophy. He is co-principal investigator for an European-Commission-funded (Horizon 2020) project, ”Mapping Normative Frameworks for Ethics and Integrity of Research”.

His primary research interests are applied ethics, bioethics, medical law, philosophy of science, phenomenology, aesthetics and the history of philosophy.

As well as producing a monograph and book chapters with Routledge and Springer, he has published in high-ranking journals, including AJOB Empirical BioethicsAustralasian Journal of PhilosophyJournal of Applied Philosophy, The American Journal of Bioethics and The Journal of Medicine and Philosophy.

He engages with empirically-grounded, practically-normative questions in medical ethics. In addition, he seeks to understand the ways in which dialogues between bioethics, medical law, practical philosophy, phenomenology, psychiatry and neuropsychology can inform the ways in which we deal with practical and policy issues concerning autonomy, freedom and responsibility. He also explores the nature of experimental methods in the medical, behavioural and social sciences at the intersections of ethics, experimental philosophy and philosophy of science.

Currently, he is developing a project that looks at the ethical obligations of patients and physicians in contexts of Shared Decision Making, the role that children and cognitively-impaired adults should play in clinical decision making and the ways in which philosophical accounts of autonomy and moral responsibility interact with associated concepts and arguments developed in medical law, neuroethics and psychiatry.

He previously taught philosophy at the University of Cambridge and Royal Holloway, University of London, having gained degrees from Royal Holloway, King's College, London and the University of Cambridge.
