Biography

I lecture in French literature and film, and also teach some language modules in SALIS.  Some of the writers and filmmakers on whom I have published or given conference papers include (for France) Modiano, Perec, Ernaux, Maspero, Varda, Audiard, and (for Québec) Micone, Farhoud and Aloisio, as detailed under the Publications section of this profile. I published my book on autofiction and biographical writing in Modiano  in 2005. My edited volume on Modiano and the Image came out with French Cultural Studies in 2011. In 2017, I spoke at ENSA in Paris on Modiano et la ville. I have two current book projects: Perspectives on Paris in Writing, Film and Photography; and Marginal Childhoods in France and Quebec. In 2016, I edited a special issue on New Work on Immigration and Identity in France, Quebec and Ireland   In April 2016 I received the Prix de la delegation québécoise (Irlande) for a project on memories of childhood in recent autobiographical writing in Québec.

I work across contemporary writing and film (and sometimes photography), mainly produced in France but also in Quebec. My research domains include the following: autobiographical writing; accounts of childhood and youth; representations of migration and immigrant experiences; hybrid identities in Quebec as expressed in literature and film; representations of the city (mainly Paris) in photography, writing and film. I am interested in supervising (and possibly co-supervising) PhD students on aspects of contemporary culture in France and Quebec, usually post-1960, in these fields.

I hold a B.A. in French and English and an M.A. and PhD in French literature from University College Dublin.I was an Erasmus student at the Université de Caen during my B.A. and followed this with a very enjoyable year as a lectrice at the Université de Rennes II. I also spent time in Paris, attached to the Ecole normale supérieure (Ulm) during my doctoral studies. I was an IRCHSS postdoctoral research fellow at Trinity College Dublin from 2004-2006. From 2006 to 2008, I was Senior Lecturer at Oxford Brookes University. I have also taught at University College Dublin, the National University of Ireland, Maynooth, and Waterford Regional Technical College (now W.I.T.). I gained a PCTHE (Postgraduate certificate in teaching in higher education) from Oxford Brookes University in 2008. I joined the Department of French at Saint Patrick’s College in September 2008 and was incorporated into the School of Applied Languages and Intercultural Studies at DCU (SALIS) in September 2016.

Here is a sample of my recent and current teaching:
  • French literature and film.
  • Perceptions of Otherness
  • Autour de Paris: images et textes de la banlieue
  • Mémoire et identité (Modiano, Québec, Micone, Ernaux)
