Biography

Aisling Twohill is a lecturer in Mathematics Education, in the School of STEM Education, Innovation and Global Studies. In 2012 Aisling was awarded the Michael Jordan Fellowship of St Patrick's College, and she held this position until September 2015.

Aisling completed her B.Ed and PG Dip Ed in St. Patrick’s College, Drumcondra, and spent twelve years teaching in primary school, where she developed a keen interest in supporting teachers in facilitating children's deep mathematical thinking. Her doctoral research examined the algebraic thinking of children attending primary school in Ireland, within the context of shape patterning. Her research interests encompass the role of shape patterning in children's developing thinking; and assessment of children's thinking through task-based interviews. Other interests include the complex interplay between theory and practice in teacher education, and interventions to stretch the thinking of all children.

Aisling teaches on all Mathematics Education modules of the BEd, PMEP and MEd programmes and is a year head on the BEd programme.

Outreach Activities

  Description

Coordinated the engagement of over 100 children in an international attempt at a Guinness World Record for large scale engagement. The focus activity was an integrated mathematics and science lesson. Classes were organised on the St Patrick's Campus for children from local schools. Schools outside of Drumcondra were invited to take part on their own premises, and supported in their participation.

Coordinated a series of Mathematics Masterclasses under the umbrella of the Royal Institution, London. Children from local schools who were identified as attaining at a high level in mathematics participated in enrichment mathematics lessons on topics from outside the primary school mathematics curriculum.
