Biography

Susan is a Lecturer in Geography Education at the DCU Institute of Education.

Teaching and Learning 
Susan coordinates Geography, Environmental and Outdoor (GEO) Education at DCU Institute of Education. 

Susan is Junior Vice President of the Geographical Association (GA), and will be President of the organisation in 2020-2021. As the GA's Champion for Ireland, Susan coordinates the Geography Champions network and 
was awarded the GA's Award for Excellence in 2016. She is a member of the GA's Early Years and Primary Committee, Education Group and is a Trustee of the charity. 

Susan is currently External Examiner at the University of Roehampton (PGCE, Roehampton) and the University of Chichester (BA Outdoor Learning, Colaiste Dhulaigh).


Research Interests and Activity
Susan's research interests span education in schools, teacher education and communities, specifically learning in geography, environmental education, education for sustainability, citizenship and human rights education as well as enquiry pedagogies and children's geographies.

Susan has produced resources for schools, including EcoDetectives and Folen’s Primary Atlas. Susan's highly praised book Learning Primary Geography: Ideas and Inspirations from the Classroom, features theory and practices in primary schools. 


Within DCU Susan is a member of the Centre for Collaborative Research Across Teacher Education for the 21st Century (CREATE21). Susan is currently tracking students' experiences of teaching and learning in Geography Education through the BEd programme. She is leading a new project on First in Family Teachers (FiF) with DCU students. Susan is a member of the DCU Education Disadvantage Centre (EDC) and the DCU Water Institute and also sits on the steering committee of the DCU Centre for Human Rights and Citizenship Education (CHRCE).

Beyond DCU Susan is a member of the Geography Education Research Collective (GERECO), which undertakes high quality state of the art research and scholarship in geography education. She is on the Editorial Board of the International Research in Geographical and Environmental Education (IRGEE). Susan also works with various NGOs and other organisations in Ireland, including the BurrenBeo Trust, Cloughjordan EcoVillage and Environmental Education Ireland.


Current Projects and Future Plans 
She is currently working on a second level book for teachers, entitled Learning Secondary Geography with Routledge. Susan is also co-chairing the WaterWonders Project on learning about water in localities, with primary schools in Dublin and Meath with Professor Tom Collins. 

Susan welcomes contact from organisations and individuals interested in all areas outlined above. Prospective students for study at Masters (Taught and by Research) and Doctoral level are also welcome to contact Susan by email.
