Biography

Lorraine is an associate professor in Mathematics Education in the School of STEM Education, Innovation and Global Studies.Prior to incorporation into DCU in 2016, Lorraine was Head of Mathematics, Mathematics Methods, ICT and Assessment in the Church of Ireland College of Education.
Lorraine is currently involved in a number of collaborative local, national and international research projects. These include looking at mathematics curriculum design to support teacher efficacy; examining the factors that contribute to the successful transition in mathematics education for pupils moving from primary to post-primary schools in Ireland and Northern Ireland; a cross border study supporting ITE students to integrate technology into their mathematics teaching so as to enhance learning; and an international study on embedding literature in mathematics teaching and learning.
Lorraine holds an honors B.Ed. degree and a Higher Certificate in Froebel Education. She obtained her Doctorate in Education from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne where she focused on mathematical understanding in the lower primary years.

Outreach Activities

  Description

I was an invited speaker to the Parents Association AGM in Curtlestown NS in which I presented on Your Child and the Primary School Curriculum.

I organise Maths Week activities each year and have also hosted a number of events for primary schools.

I delivered a mathematics workshop to every class from Junior Infants through to Sixth Class in Ballinteer BNS during their Maths Week.

I was the invited guest facilitator to deliver a CPD workshop during Croke Park Hours on Tables and Time in Ballinteer Boys’ NS.

Teaching Interests

I lecturer in all areas of mathematics for primary school teaching. This includes teaching mathematics in the infant classroom, embedding technology into the teaching and learning of mathematics as well as assessment of and for learning.  I also look at addressing student teachers' own mathematics subject knowledge, professional identity and self-efficacy.
