Biography

Dr. Lovatt is an Associate Professor in Science Education and Head of the School of STEM Education, Innovation and Global Studies in the DCU Institute of Education. He teaches and researches in the area of Initial Teacher Education and STEM Education and Education Transitions and Evaluation. Dr. Lovatt completed is PhD in the area of Chemistry Education. He is a member of two research centres; the Centre for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) and the Centre for Evaluation, Quality and Inspection (EQI). He is has a number of professional affiliations including membership of the Irish Science Teachers Association (ISTA), European Science Education Research Association (ESERA), Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), Irish Association of Science Education Lecturers (IASEL) and he is also a member of a network for research-based teacher education - Teacher Education: QUality, Integration and LeArning (TEQUILA). Dr. Lovatt has previously served as Chair of the Professional Masters of Education and as the School of Education Studies coordinator for the BSc Science Education, BSc Physical Education with Biology and BSc Physics Education with Mathematics. Dr. Lovatt has participated in EU 7th Framework projects (SAILS). He is recently been successful in a H2020 project Open Schools for Open Societies with colleagues from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and is currently collaborating with international colleagues to develop further Horizon 2020 and Erasmus+ applications.

Research Interests

Dr. Lovatt's research interests and expertise are in the areas of Science Education, Teacher Education, Teaching and Learning Methodologies with specific interest in Inquiry-Based-Science-Education (IBSE), Classroom Discourse, Assessment, Informal Learning and Education Design. Dr. Lovatt is also interested in School Evaluation and Transitions in Education. Dr. Lovatt is involved in a number a European and Industry Funded Projects through collaborations with colleagues in the Centre for the Advancement of Science and Mathematics Teaching & Learning (CASTeL) and is also a member of the Centre for Evaluation, Quality and Inspection (EQI).
