Biography

I am an Associate Professor in Health Systems Research in the School of Nursing and Human Sciences, in DCU and am currently the Research Convenor for the School (since Sept 2018). I have previously held the roles of Associate Dean for Research for the Faculty of Science and Health (2014-2017) and Deputy Head of School  (2011-2014).

Over the past number of years I have represented DCU on the national working group developing and implementing the "Making Every Contact  - National Undergraduate Curriculum for Health Behaviour Change"
This was a collaboration between every HEI in Ireland and the Health Service Executive and the first standardised curriculum for Health Professionals in the Country.
https://www.hse.ie/eng/about/who/healthwellbeing/making-every-contact-count/making-every-contact-count-framework.pdf

I am currently leading a number of projects in the area of Autism. The most recent one "Developing an Autism Friendly University at DCU" which is a collaboration with AsIam and Specialisterne was launched in April 2018 by the President of Ireland Michael D Higgins https://www.dcu.ie/news/news/2018/Mar/Dublin-City-University-designated-world%E2%80%99s-first-Autism A full report from this work is available from Mary Rose at maryrose.sweeney@dcu.ie. This project which was developed in DCU is now translating to many other HEIs nationally and internationally including in the UK, Europe, USA and Australia. In addition the project is translating to other setting such as hospitals and technology companies.

I am also the lead investigator on the Irish arm of an EU project entitled Autism Spectrum Disorders in the EU http://asdeu.eu/. This project involves researchers from 12 countries in Europe and the programme was established to

– Study the prevalence of autism in 12 countries
– Analyse the economic and social costs of autism
– Develop proposals for early detection programmes
– Validate biomarkers for the disorder
– Train professionals
– Improve understanding of diagnosis, comorbidity and effective care and support for adults and senior citizens with autism
– Propose policies to promote harmonised support for people with ASD across member states.

A final report has just been submitted to the EU Commission and several publications are in preparation.

I have recently completed an evaluation of the impact of taking part in Special Olympics programmes for persons with intellectual disabilities https://www.dcu.ie/news/2016/oct/s1016o.shtml. The study demonstrated that there are many benefits in terms of health and wellbeing as well as societal and economic gains to participation in Special Olympic programmes.

I have also recently lead a prevalence study of autism spectrum disorders in a school population in the Republic of Ireland which reported a prevalence rate of 1% and demonstrated the feasibility of screening in the classroom setting http://www.dcu.ie/news/2016/apr/s0416b.shtml.

I have also been leading several nutrition related projects over the past number of years and recently published a new study which explored the impact of the post-primary school setting on diet and physical activity behaviour's of Irish teenagers https://www.dcu.ie/news/2016/august/s0816i.shtml. A follow up study "The Shape Up Your School Project" is underway at this time. This was part of the EU project DEDIPAC https://www.dedipac.eu/ a project examining the determinants of diet and physical activity
.
I have been working in the area of folic acid for the past 20 years and my most recent project in this area noted a sharp decline in the number of food staples fortified with folic acid in the Republic of Ireland http://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/drop-in-array-of-folic-acid-added-foods-linked-to-birth-defect.

Our group have recently completed research exploring fluoridation policy and practice across the EU. The work was presented at the all-Ireland Cochrane meeting in Belfast in 2016 http://www.qub.ac.uk/research-centres/cesi/News/Hostingthe11thAnnualCochraneinIrelandConferenceatQue and is being submitted for publication shortly.

I have a number of on-going projects in the area of teaching and learning in nurse education. A recent publication of ours in this area documented our programme team's transition from class-room delivered Bachelor of Nursing Studies to blended learning format is available at the URL below
http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/10376178.2016.1197781?journalCode=rcnj20.

I was also awarded seed funding from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning http://www.teachingandlearning.ie/digital-enhancement-funding/teaching-learning-enhancement-fund-cal to explore the research skills of clinical nurses in the Republic of Ireland. This work was conducted in one HSE area exploring the views and experiences of nurses across a range of disciplines and all grades. A publication is in preparation at this time.
