Biography

Eilish McLoughlin is the Director of the Centre for the Advancement of STEM Teaching and Learning (CASTeL) and an Assoicate Professor in the School of Physical Sciences at Dublin City University (DCU). She obtained her Ph.D. (2000) in Surface Physics and is a member of the Institute of Physics and a Chartered Physicist. She was a recipient of the DCU President’s Award for Teaching and Learning and also a recipient of the DCU Teaching Fellowship in 2005 and received a National Award for Teaching Excellence in 2010.

She is actively involved in research on STEM education, focusing on STEM teacher education at both pre-service and in-service levels as well as pedagogy and assessment at second and third level. Her research interests are in the implementation of innovative pedagogies, such as inquiry based learning and interdisciplinary approaches and the effective use of digital learning. She plays a leading role in two major pan-European projects focussed on teacher education in Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) - including coordinator of the FP7 ESTABLISH project (2010-2014) and a member of the coordinating team on the FP7 SAILS project (2012-2015).   She has served as an advisor to the Irish Government on initiatives in science and mathematics and as an expert evaluator of the EU FP7 programme. She is a member of several international boards in science education, including IUPAP Physics Education, ESERA, Science on Stage and is current co-chair of the Institute of Physics (IOP) in Ireland Education group.

Research Interests

Eilish's research is focused on STEM education, and in particular STEM teacher education at both pre-service and in-service levels and pedagogy and assessment at second and third level. Her research interests are in the implementation of innovative pedagogies, such as inquiry based learning and interdisciplinary approaches and the effective use of digital learning. She has played leading roles in two major pan-European projects focussed on teacher education in Inquiry Based Science Education (IBSE) - including coordinator of the FP7 ESTABLISH project (2010-2014) and deputy coordinator on the FP7 SAILS project (2012-2015).

She has served as an advisor to the Irish Government on initiatives in science and mathematics and as an expert member of the EU H2020 SWAFS working group.. She is a member of several international boards in science education, including IUPAP Physics Education, ESERA, Science on Stage and is current co-chair of the Institute of Physics (IOP) in Ireland Education group. She is Chair of two international STEM education conferences to be held in Dublin: ESERA 2017 and GIREP-ICPE-EPEC 2017.

Science on Stage Europe
Science on Stage Ireland coordinates and promotes Irish participation at the European Science on Stage festivals and shares the teaching ideas generated at these festivals through the use of video and resource booklets.
Amgen
The Amgen Science Teacher Training Initiative provided secondary life science teachers in Europe with meaningful professional development opportunities through a new pilot science education programme. The initiative focussed on those teaching science, primarily biology and chemistry, to students aged 12 to 18. CASTeL acted as the Irish partner during the pilot phases of this project
Accenture
STEM Student Teacher Internship Programme aims to highlight the careers available in STEM to students studying to be teachers as well as offering them real work experience in a corporate environment.
Intel
The SmartClass project addresses the challenges of integrating tablet technology into classroom practice at Junior Cycle level. Intel have funded a prize to provide a tablet device to an entire first year cohort of Junior Cycle students with curriculum content for all subjects pre-loaded on it. CASTeL are responsible for providing professional development to the teachers, examining teacher’s pedagogical practices and evaluating the benefits, to both the teacher and the students, of the integration of tablet technology in classroom practice. In order for teachers to effectively integrate technology into classroom practice, several challenges have been identified, which include hardware, software, administration and support. However, teachers own beliefs and attitudes towards technology and pedagogy have been identified as intrinsic barriers specific to each teacher that must also be addressed. The Smartclass project brings together Intel, CASTeL and an Irish Second level school to collaboratively address all of these challenges.

Outreach Activities

  Description

Physics Busking, (www.physicsbusking.ie), is dedicated to increasing STEM public engagement and education through a yearlong calendar of public engagement events and science communication workshops. Working in collaboration with leading national festival and event organisers, the Physics Busking team of researchers, teachers and enthusiasts bring STEM demos and activities to the shopping streets, gardens and fields of Ireland.Physics Busking is an education and public engagement national collaboration led by CASTeL at Dublin City University and the Institute of Physics in Ireland since 2005. Since 2014, this project has been funded by Science Foundation Ireland.
